How To Breathe Under Water
Art installation about the fuzzy boundaries between the interior and the exterior, science and speculation, disease and health, touch and disconnection. The projection on the water droplets and glass consists of a latent space walk of images. These were generated using the StyleGan model trained on photographs of water shot during my stay in Iceland. The accompanying voice-over and sounds contribute to a dystopian landscape fed by our current detachment from both our bodies and society.
The research I carried out at SÍM in 2021 explored how the pandemic has positioned our bodies at the center of both our survival and our mortality: bodies became both huge sources of vulnerability and at the same time weapons. The projects works through the feelings of isolation shared with a large part of the world and the unexpected ways in which they manifested themselves physically when faced with the Icelandic landscape. I used machine learning to transform my own photographs of Icelandic water into latent space videos. The subtitles are generated using the artificial intelligence model GPT2 as a response to my own writing in the voice over.
