Exploration of smoke and carbon as photographic materials.
These scans exist as evidence of a process-based ritual that aimed to replicate the traces of smoke residue left on my apartment walls after a fire. The images were born from a bodily need to physically grasp the loss of my living space. I repeated endlessly the process of pouring paint and charcoal into a flat container and letting it dry. Everytime I released the dry print from its container, I ached to find out how to exist in my body after trauma. By doing so, I immersed myself in a system of control that could not be solely supported by my yearning for answers, as the laws of physics of the drying process could not be subjected to my self-doubt in posthumanistic terms. The silver color refers to the aluminum plaques used in newspapers printing presses. Some of the images in the series include quotes from the novel “La Peste” by Albert Camus. By doing so, I bring into question the dichotomy of disasters: their cleansing nature and their devastation. The text thus exists as both the key to society’s redemption and as cautionary tale.
